ABOUT CHANGE.ORG

Change.org, the world's largest petition platform, enables over 200 million users to advocate for change.

Student petitions, a significant portion of the platform's activity, often gain traction but struggle to convert momentum into real-world impact. What differentiates successful petitions from those dismissed by decision-makers or losing engagement over time?

THE ASK

How might we enable student petition starters on Change.org to sustain engagement with signers and gain credibility with decision-makers?

THE JOURNEY OF A PETITION

OBJECTIVE

  1. How do we set up petition starters like Alyssa up for success?

  2. How do we keep student signers like Tim engaged after signing?

  3. How can we make decision makers’ like Carol’s process more transparent?

THE JOURNEY OF A PETITION STARTER

WHAT’S NEW FOR CHANGE.ORG

We had an incredible opportunity to interview a diverse group of stakeholders, from students who initiated the free laundry campaign in the dorms to staff members from the Chancellor’s office and the Dean of Haas. Through these interviews, we gained valuable insights into how students start and grow their campaigns and how decision-makers respond to student proposals.

Petition Starters:
For example, petition starter Alyssa can use the community hub to gain insights into the decision-makers (DM) they want to address. The hub provides information on past interactions with the DM, the success rates of similar petitions, and testimonials from other starters. This crowdsourced guidance feature empowers petition starters to create effective petitions, even with no prior experience.

Petition Signers:
Petition signer Tim benefit from an easily digestible presentation of the causes behind petitions. This clarity allows them to share petitions with their friends, thereby increasing the petition's visibility and validity. Our solution includes customizable Instagram templates to facilitate outreach for both petition starters and signers. Additionally, visitors to the site can stay informed about petitions on local, national, and global levels through the news section.

Decision Makers:
Decision maker Carol can also utilize the community hub to respond and claim pages about themselves, clear up misconceptions, and directly interact with petition starters. The new petition starter dashboard bridges the gap between decision-makers and starters. It integrates guidance, campaign method guides, and data visualization for demographics, collectively creating a logical and impactful appeal to decision-makers.
